Description
The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada, oversees Canada’s participation in national and international assessments, and EQAO coordinates Ontario’s participation on behalf of the provincial government. These assessments are developed and administered by external organizations and provide a benchmark for Ontario students’ achievement alongside that of students in other education systems and jurisdictions, both nationally and internationally. The results contribute to the larger picture of student achievement in Ontario and inform the public, education policy makers and thought leaders.
Pan Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP)
PCAP consists of national standardized tests administered every three years that measure the abilities of Grade 8 students in reading, mathematics and science. Each assessment focuses on a major domain, with a minor concentration on the two other domains.
Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)
PIRLS is an international assessment administered every five years that measures the abilities of Grade 4 students in reading literacy.
Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)
PISA is an international test administered every three years that measures the abilities of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics and science.
Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
TIMSS is an international assessment administered every four years that measures the abilities of Grade 4 and Grade 8 students in mathematics and science.
