In 2020–2021, EQAO will be field testing a multi-stage adaptive online Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics. It will comprise two sessions (Session A and Session B) that contain a total of 50 multiple-choice questions. Each session comprises 25 multiple-choice questions and has two stages. Student achievement in the first stage will determine whether the student receives questions with an overall difficulty of low, medium or high for the second stage.
The questions for each assessment are distributed among the academic strands in the current Grade 9 mathematics curriculum (Number Sense and Algebra; Linear Relations; Analytic Geometry; and Measurement and Geometry) or the applied strands (Number Sense and Algebra; Linear Relations; and Measurement and Geometry).
All 50 multiple-choice questions on the assessment are operational items, which means they are “live” questions that count toward the student’s score.
Prior to taking the Grade 9 assessment, students have the opportunity to become familiar with its format through an introductory session. During this session, students will have access to a sample test comprising multiple-choice questions from previous assessments.
