EQAO COO resigns to return to York Region District School Board

The agency welcomes Dr. Laurie McNelles as COO

TORONTO, December 11, 2019 — After two years serving as Chief Assessment Officer, and recently as Chief Operating Officer (COO), Dr. Steven Reid has resigned from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) to return to the York Region District School Board (YRDSB).

Dr. Reid has supported the agency by implementing initiatives that expanded assessment accommodations to better reflect classroom practice and improved the agency’s ability to produce more data and EQAO-led research. EQAO shows that when evidence is provided in ways that stimulate dialogue and exploration, student learning and achievement are supported.

The agency staff and board wish Dr. Reid well as he assumes the position of Associate Director of Education, Schools and Programs, with YRDSB. In this role, he will support collaborative efforts to raise the achievement and well-being of underserved and underperforming students.

As the agency continues the search for a Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Laurie McNelles will be the new COO of EQAO. Dr. McNelles has served as Director, Data and Reporting, at EQAO since 2017, overseeing the research, psychometrics, data management and analysis and IT departments. Before coming to EQAO, she worked as a Senior Evaluation Consultant at the Treasury Board Secretariat, where she supported ministries in performance measurement and monitoring.

I will continue to advocate for its commitment to enhancing the quality and accountability of our education system.”
