EQAO Welcomes Four New Members to Board of Directors

Leaders have extensive experience in education and public and community service

The Board of Directors at the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is changing with the appointment of four new members.

The Government of Ontario has appointed David Agnew, Gail Anderson, Michael Bowe and Pierre Alain Riopel to EQAO’s Board of Directors.

EQAO is an arm’s-length agency of the Government of Ontario that contributes to the equity, quality and accountability of Ontario’s publicly funded education system. The agency provides insights that can support the achievement of every student, regardless of background or circumstance. To fulfill its mandate, EQAO administers large-scale assessments grounded in The Ontario Curriculum, coordinates Ontario’s participation in national and international assessments, contributes to education research and assists the education community in understanding, analyzing and using the agency’s data.

EQAO’s work is overseen by its board of directors, whose members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council and are drawn from leadership positions in diverse fields of expertise, such as education, business and policy.

QUICK FACTS

  • David Agnew is currently the president of Seneca College. His previous leadership positions include president and CEO of UNICEF Canada, principal at Digital 4Sight, executive vice-president for Credit Union Central of Ontario, and Canada’s ombudsman for banking services and investments. Mr. Agnew was secretary to the cabinet in Ontario from 1992 to 1995 after serving as principal secretary to the premier. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 in recognition of his public and community service.
  • Gail Anderson worked at the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association from 1989 until her retirement as executive director in 2017. Her community involvement includes being a founding member of Classroom Connections Working Foundation and the Ontario Education Services Corporation. Ms. Anderson holds a Master of Education degree and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto.
  • Michael Bowe is currently the supervisor of diversity and outreach at the York Region Children’s Aid Society, having previously been a family service worker for the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. Mr. Bowe’s community involvement has included being co-chair of the Black Business and Professional Association’s Young Professional section. He was a member of the York Region District School Board (YRDSB), most recent Director of the Education Selection Subcommittee, and is a member of the YRDSB Equity Inclusivity Advisory Committee to the Director of Education. Mr. Bowe is a member of the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies Child Welfare Anti-Oppression Roundtable. He holds a Master of Social Work degree from York University.
  • Pierre Alain Riopel held a number of positions during his career in education, including teacher, department head, acting vice-principal and principal. Mr. Riopel was most recently superintendent of education for the Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario and president of Collège Boréal. Mr. Riopel has also been involved in teacher training as an assistant professor in the French-language education program at Laurentian University. Mr. Riopel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Ottawa, and he completed the Master of Education program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.
