The Ministry of Education
announced that teacher candidates will be expected to successfully complete a math proficiency test and that EQAO will be responsible for creating the assessment.
Ontario Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) website is now available to the public. Please note that the website can only be accessed using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Edge. We are currently working closely with our partners, including the Ministry of Education, Ontario College of Teachers and the Ontario faculties of education to support implementation of the MPT. Testing dates have not yet been established.
EQAO has developed sample questions and answers to help test applicants familiarize themselves with the scope and content of the MPT. The Ministry of Education is currently reviewing the sample questions and answers. Once EQAO receives a response from the Ministry to move forward, they will be posted on the MPT website. Already available on the MPT website is a detailed blueprint of the MPT. This document contains an overview of the assessment and a framework of the components of each of its mathematics proficiency and pedagogy sections. The MPT website will be updated with further information and resources as soon as they become available.

The Ministry of Education announced that teacher candidates will be expected to successfully complete a math proficiency test and that EQAO will be responsible for creating the assessment. As an evidence-based agency, we look to research to guide our practice. To inform the development of a teacher-candidate test in Ontario, the agency has compiled a report outlining existing research and key takeaways from other jurisdictions. We will build on this evidence and continue to use best practices, in collaboration with our stakeholders, to ensure we adhere to internationally recognized standards for large-scale test development.
