Case Studies: Schools on the Journey of Learning

Observations from the Field

Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics, 2008–2009

The release of EQAO data has become a catalyst for annual reflection and discussion among Ontario’s educators. While the assessments themselves mark the end of a cycle of instruction, learning and evaluation, the analysis of EQAO results marks the beginning of a cycle of improvement planning across our school communities.

EQAO is pleased to profile six secondary school communities from across the province that are
  • use provincial assessment results as evidence contributing to their own improvement planning
  • are on a journey of learning and continuous improvement
  • demonstrate leadership, proactive initiatives, positive attitudes and sincere efforts to help every child succeed
  • have adopted an action plan based on their unique circumstances and work toward improved student outcomes
Common themes schools identify as factors in addressing the mathematical learning needs of students are
  • a school-wide focus on numeracy
  • using EQAO data and resources to support instruction
  • increased cross-panel dialogue
  • the appropriate placement of students in the Grade 9 program
  • connecting mathematical concepts to real world experience
  • using technology and manipulatives for enhanced conceptual understanding and problem solving
  • the tracking of all student progress
  • in-school learning communities
  • board support for professional development and programs
  • remedial help for at-risk learners

EQAO celebrates these schools’ stories and applauds the efforts of Ontario’s educators, parents and public as we all work together to inspire students to become successful learners.
